a hall too far
Well phew, I’ve not posted in ages that’s a hall too far
Rather than my usual thousand-odd words on how I painted a wall, I’ll be brief. I’ll try to keep to the point and I’ll let the pictures do the talking.
Basically, I got the lighting finished and sorted in the hall. Lots of two-way switching too and a job well done.
I hung a new vertical radiator in metallic gold to the top of the stairwell, it looks more brown than gold. I hung another radiator downstairs too, only one more radiator planned now to do.
I bought some blinds for the bathroom, so I no longer need to pee in the dark and I finally got around to buying a Henry vacuum cleaner, I should have bought one when I started, some five vacuum cleaners ago.
I even managed to do a bit more coving, I only used the narrow jobbie as I was trying to fit it into the coving that was already in the corridor. It turned out I could have used the deeper coving though and possibly got a nicer result.
The hall was then stripped and filled and sanded and painted, then filled, sanded and painted a handful more times. I then caulked and touched up and did a bit more of this for good measure.
The hall was a nightmare to decorate, lots of nooks and crannies and lots of gnarly wallpaper. Walls that needed lots of filling and mollycoddling and lots and lots and lots of woodwork. There were also lots of electrics and pipework requiring chasing and filling and lots of lovely dust as a consequence. I went to town shrouding the corridors with lots of sheets to keep the dust in its place, the dust had other ideas and got everywhere.
The front deco door was a particular problem, just masking it took three hours and then painting and caulking again and again afterward. The woodwork everywhere took at least three coats, whether my standards had raised or it was just awkward woodwork I don’t know, but with the paneling, skirting, and doors it took an age to get right.
The banister and newel post took days too, the Nitromors didn’t touch the varnish, so it was out with my trusty sander. Then it was out with my trusty multi-tool – with sanding attachment – for hard to reach bits. It looked splendid when stripped but took a while to paint up to and I’m halfway through oiling now. So not much further until it’s finished.
Months of work with little to show for it, however, it was one of the worst jobs I’ve tackled. It’s nearly done now and it does look rather spiffing though.
